Yab Yum

Ashwem, north Goa

Yab Yum has 14 pods and 5 cottages. Which you choose is really down to personal taste, although the majority of guests certainly favour the pods. If you really need A/C then the cottages are the only choice.

Of the pods – or ‘domes’ as they are officially called – 6 are ‘standard domes’, sleeping two adults in one king size bed. 4 are ‘family domes’: 2 medium, 2 large, but all sleeping just two adults and two children. There’s also one multi-room suite pod (sleeping 4) and two ‘honey pods’ (both sleeping 2). All three sit in a more secluded spot on top of the sand dune at the edge of the beach with views of the ocean.

Of the 5 cottages, 1 is twin (double bed + single bed), 2 standard (1 king size bed) and 2 are family cottages with 2 bedrooms.

The pods are built for the heat: large, cool and dark inside, even during the middle of the day. Being eco-aware there’s no A/C but this is barely necessary; even in the hotter months the large ceiling fans do a good job.

Although quite sparsely decorated, these rooms still feel cosy with their dark blue colour scheme, moulded beds and tasteful wooden furniture. Excepting the Suite Pod all are open plan, which is great for families (although older kids might disagree). All pods have a leafy semi-private dining area just beside them; if you’re looking for privacy, try and book the suite or honey pods, they have extremely private outside spaces with ocean views.

Cottages are smaller inside, but much more bright and airy, with little verandas to sit out and dine on, but don’t expect the same subterranean cool as the pods. They are also closer to the beach; Cottage 01 is a favourite with many guests for its proximity to the ocean, though it is also close to the (rather sedate) bar area.

Rate the bathroom!

3.5 / 5 – A little cramped due to the curved walls of the pods, the bathrooms are nonetheless charming. In the cottages they are a little bigger although size varies cottage to cottage, dome to dome. Still a cut above most other beachfront bathrooms and they do have hot water and decent shower pressure – a godsend after a hot day digging holes in the sand.
