Yab Yum

Ashwem, north Goa

Yab Yum is on Ashvem beach in Pernem, the northernmost district or taluka of Goa. The busier Morjim is to the south and the more laidback Mandrem to the north.

The villages near the resort are simple, catering to tourism around the beachfront but becoming very local as soon as you get inland.

How to get there:

Take a taxi from anywhere in Goa, or ask the hotel to collect you.

By air:
Goa airport aka Dabolim is very well served all year round by domestic flights (Indigo/GoAir, Jet, Air India, SpiceJet), as well as international charter flights during the holiday season.

By train:

Goa’s main station is Madgaon (in Margao) and is well served by trains coming south from Mumbai and north from Kerala. For Ashvem, try to alight at Pernem or Thivim rather than Madgaon.

Take a taxi from the station or even easier ask the hotel to collect you (chargeable).

By taxi / road:
Coming from the south head towards Morjim, then head up the coastal road towards Ashvem. Yab Yum is craftily hidden at the bottom of a track leading down to the beach, about 2 mins drive from the turning for La Plage restaurant.

Distances & travel times:

airport: 50km / 1 hr 25 mins

railway stations:
Madgaon: 70km / 1 hr 55 mins
Thivim: 25km / 40 mins
Pernem: 20km / 35 mins

When to go:

Yab Yum opens right at the start of the holiday season in mid-October, and closes in mid-April. The best months are November to February, but for a quieter time and a bit less heat try October. April can be extremely hot.

Expect Christmas and New Year to be very busy and book as early as you can (even a year in advance if possible!).

Getting around:

Walk along the beach or hire a scooter for local travel. Otherwise book a taxi: unofficial taxis are everywhere but Yab Yum have their own drivers who know Goa very well.

Public transport is not the best option though a local bus service does exist.

Ultimately, scooter or motorbike is perhaps the best way to explore Goa as it gives you great flexibility. Be aware that those upfront should wear a helmet and drive only tourist-licensed bikes. Traffic around Ashwem is not heavy but there are many unmarked speed breakers, so take it easy!
