Yab Yum

Ashwem, north Goa

Yab Yum offers a large complimentary breakfast – continental style – with a tick-box menu to leave on your door the night before. Choices include various eggs, cereals, yoghurt, toast, fruit, tea, coffee and juice.

All meals can be eaten at the dining areas outside your pod or cottage, or at the restaurant tables near the beach. Eating in rooms isn’t recommended unless you want an army of ants among your belongings;  remember, you are in the middle of nature. The kitchen caters only to guests.

The lunch menu offers a small range of European snacks and mains, simple, fresh and unfussy, they fill a gap during the day, although on the beaches we find people tend to skip their midday meal anyway and wait for dinner.

Dinner is purely Indian and manager Mr Pal’s northern cuisine is some of the best and most authentic in the area. Unlike other shacks that serve generic dishes, Yab Yum really does give proper flavours, more akin to the best kind of home cooking rather than shack food.

Menu

The daytime menu has a good variety of salads plus dosa and chicken and fish tikka.

Dinner-wise there’s a flavoursome thali (veg or non-veg), as well as the option to order larger portions of the individual thali dishes. Also, check out the Keralan prawn curry or the Goan kingfish, fresh and filling. Vegetarians too have plenty of choice.

Dining nearby

North Goa is simply great for food and Yab Yum provides a great, trustworthy guide to the best places; follow it and you can’t go wrong.

Within walking distance: head south down the beach i.e. go left out of the beach gate, there are no recommended places to the right. Borrow a torch if it’s dark!

Just next door to Yab Yum is Pagan Café, essentially just a beach hut with chairs and tables on the sand, but a great spot with a wide-ranging menu and some good options for kids. 10 mins further and you will find the excellent French-fusion restaurant La Plage which is always worth a visit and very reasonably priced.

Further afield check out Café Nu in Mandrem village, Fellini’s in Arambol for the best pizza around, and the excellent Sublime which at the time of writing is relocating to nearby Morjim.
