The Secret Garden
Saligao, north Goa
Staying in is actually a great option. Revel in the privacy and tranquility and relax by the pool all day. You can curl up with a good book too (there’s an eclectic selection available), in a lounge chair or hammock, play some of the board games available, or even make yourself a cocktail from the honesty bar.
When you’re ready to venture out, use the in-house guide and ask Helene’s advice. In Goa, a very transitional place, a wealth of local knowledge is a fantastic thing to have to hand, so make sure you take advantage.
The nearest beach is 10 minutes away at Calangute but we don’t recommend it unless watersports and crowds are your thing. Instead, head further north, add another 15 to 30 minutes to your drive and go to Vagator or even better, up to the beaches at Morjim or Ashwem.
Nearby, check out the superb MOG (Museum of Goa), which is India’s largest privately owned gallery and art space; entry is just 300 rupees and the gallery also hosts the excellent Om Made CafĂ©.
If you have even the slightest desire to go shopping in Goa, don’t forget the weekly Wednesday flea market at Anjuna for trinkets, fabrics and more, the Friday market at Mapusa for some exposure to local life, and the Saturday night market at nearby Arpora for its lively atmosphere, food, live music and endless colourful stalls full of things you may well want to take home as gifts.
