Staying in:
There’s a good stock of books, board games for all ages and grounds to wander round. Bonfires are built in the evening, but if you don’t feel like venturing outdoors Paddy will have the fireplace lit and roaring for you in no time.
You can also request a cookery class if you feel inspired to emulate the lovely cooking on offer.

Out and about:
The Retreat is nestled in a forest, so do take the short hike up to the ridge above to watch the sun set over the lake. There are plenty of other short to moderate treks that can be arranged if you’re up to it.

A place you MUST experience is the Butterfly Research Centre, located right next door to The Retreat. Here the incredible collection of the most beautiful butterflies and moths has been put together by Peter Smetacek, a respected author and researcher, and is well worth the visit.

Make a day of it:
Bhimtal is a good base for exploring the area. Nainital and the surrounding lakes would make for a great day trip, as would Ranikhet and Almora. If you’re in the mood for something a bit wilder you could visit the Jim Corbett National Park and hope to spot a tiger, or a whole host of other wildlife, large and small.
