Talabgaon Castle

near Jaipur, Rajasthan

The more time that is spent within the castle grounds of Talabgaon, the more guests can get from their stay. The family that owns and runs Talabgaon Castle makes sure its guests are sufficiently entertained, if entertainment is what they are after.

Stay in:
A walk around the whole property should easily set you back about an hour and a half, and that’s hardly at a leisurely pace. The Rathore brothers are proud to show you around their private polo grounds, the lake bordering the castle, and all-round greenness that make up their home.

The hotel is equipped to set up a game of badminton, croquet, the traditional gilli-danda, and you can even request a stick and ball polo lesson (the brothers are professional players at national-level games).

Learn about Rajasthani cuisine with a cookery class.

The medium-sized pool is uniform in depth and the marble enclosure by the poolside is perfect for drying off and sneaking in a quick snack or drink before your next dip. Lounge chairs are available for those who want to soak up the sun.

Out and about:
Stepping outside the castle grounds, guests can ask for a local village tour, meals at a nearby country mud house, and sunset tea further out, closer towards the desert.

Evenings typically see an entertainment program by the poolside featuring local Rajasthani artists, dancers, puppeteers, and of course the quintessential fire-eaters who never fail to light up a night.

An astrologer can be arranged if you wish to make sense of the desert’s starry night sky.

A visit to the horses’ stable is usually fun for children as well as the adults accompanying them. If you’re happier to keep kids off their feet for a bit, a horseback safari or camel cart ride through the village won’t have them complaining.

Ranthambore National Park is 90 minutes away; jeep safaris can be arranged for a perfectly great day out and, hopefully, to spot a tiger or two.

Jaipur’s vibrant markets and stunning monuments are about 90 minutes away by road.

Pamper:
The spa was due to open 6 months after our visit, offering a range of well-being rituals and body treatments.

Shop:
A shopping guide, organized upon request, might be the best way to unearth local arts & crafts. The nearby town of Lalsot has a small number of shops catering to basic necessities.

If you’re looking for traditional Rajasthani fabrics, jewellery and general fabulousness, plan to spend some time in Jaipur for more objects of desire than can reasonably fit in one suitcase.
