SwaSwara

Karnataka

SwaSwara has 24 identical ‘Konkan Villas’; 16 looking out on the rainwater lakes and jungle, 8 set back from the pool area, looking onto paddy fields.

The villas are constructed from the local red laterite stone, giving a warm, rustic and rough-hewn feel that complements the natural surroundings, with the interiors designed in a free-flowing style that blurs the lines between inside and outside spaces.

While the major part of each villa is exposed to the elements, the bedroom comes with A/C, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and full-length white cotton curtains that allow for the room to be completely sealed and kept super-cool when desired.

The bedrooms themselves are simple yet elegant and spotlessly clean, with a spacious bed, desk and cupboard with safe. They only have one plug-point, which encourages you to treat the room as a place to relax and sleep, not to work or play with gadgets.

The rest of the villa space consists of a partially open-air bathroom, a small, central garden space open to the sky, lounging area with a writing desk at one end (with plenty of plugs!) and a kettle, fridge and selection of teas at the other. Charmingly, in the garden lemongrass and basil grow, and you’re encouraged to pluck these to make your own tea.

Above each bedroom, accessed by separate outer stairs, there’s a balcony room with cooling ventilation slits in the stone and lovely views out over the villa’s edge to the jungle or paddy fields; it’s an ideal spot to read a book or take a private yoga session.
