Sukoon Houseboat

Breakfast is served between 8 to 10 am on the gorgeous roof-deck terrace (provided it isn’t raining), while lunch (12.30 – 2.30 pm) and dinner (7 – 9.30 pm) are served in the attractive dining room below.

The breakfast menu is large, with seasonal fruits followed by muesli & cornflakes, eggs cooked to order and toast with organic preserves. Local Kashmiri bread, bought early in the morning from the vendors that ply the lake, is also available. Filter coffee and different kinds of tea are served with your meal and though they don’t serve breakfast in your room, a wake-up bed tea service can be arranged.

Also available is a proper Kashmiri breakfast which has to be ordered 12 hours in advance and includes Harissa, an intense lamb preparation that takes that long to make.

Both lunch and dinner are à la carte, the menu a mix of Kashmiri and north Indian with a small section devoted to continental food. Besides the usual rogan josh and haak, which are typical to the state, the menu also includes a vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali called tram, served on a copper plate.

Snacks and a very limited selection of wine and beer (bizarrely, only Kingfisher and Sula are available) are served in your room through the day.

Breakfast is extensive. Lunch and dinner are à la carte, dominated by Kashmiri and north Indian dishes with a small selection of continental options.

Dining nearby

Sukoon’s lake-side location means everything is a speed-boat’s ride away.

The closest proper hotel is The Lalit, which is a 10 minute walk from the pier, and has the most well-stocked bar in town (which isn’t saying much) in addition to an array of restaurants that serve everything from local Kashmiri to Chinese and Continental. The tandoori trout, we hear, is particularly good.

For the best Kashmiri food in Srinagar head to Adhoo’s Hotel on Residency Road. Started in 1918, this large well-lit restaurant on the first floor of the hotel was destroyed in the floods that ravaged the city in 2014 but has recovered remarkably well since and is packed day and night. Everything Kashmiri is good here, but if you want a real feast, opt for the Wazwan (a multi-course meal with many meat-based dishes).
