Scarlette

New Delhi

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all available and the menu changes daily so there’s always something new on offer.

A mix of home-cooked comfort and elegance, the food here is wonderful. Pauline oversees the menu and as an accomplished baker is often found in the evenings in her aromatic kitchen, rustling up a new treat for the next morning.

The kitchen itself is run by Mamta, a chatty Bengali lady who’s been working here since its days as Colaba House and is skilled in both Indian and European food.

Breakfast is complimentary and can be served at any time of the day. A selection of fresh fruit, juice, toasts with butter and preserves, fresh eggs cooked to order and cake are served with Lavazza coffee or tea.

A sample lunch would be a starter of carrot and tomato soup, served with brown bread with orange chutney, and a main of lasagne or a vegetable tart, both served with leafy salad. Freshly-cut fruit, chocolate cake and cookies make up the dessert.

Dinner is typically more robust, with meat and vegetables in a European style served with a range of alcohol choices.

All meals come over several courses and are as beautifully presented as they are tasty, making even the smallest meal a lingering, pleasurable experience.

Menu

There’s no fixed menu for lunch and dinner; the menu changes daily (check the blackboard on the wall) and depends on both the whims of the chef and the produce in the market.

You can also discuss meal preferences with Mamta and tailor your meal accordingly.

When we visited, there was an incredible (gluten-free) chocolate cake, an accomplished lemon tart (made by Mamta) and a very satisying selection of homemade cookies.

Dining nearby

Nearby Safdarjung Complex (opposite the Deer Park) houses The Hungry Monkey – one of Scarlette’s own recommendations – with coffee, shakes, a wide-ranging European menu and excellent service.

Hauz Khas Village, with its trendy bars and restuarants, is a 10 minute rickshaw ride away. The list of cool restaurants here is constantly changing, with a ridiculously high opening and closing rate, yet there are some some firm favourites that endure.

Yeti, for its Nepali and north-eastern food, mutton momos and thalis; Diva Piccola for proper pizza, salads, pastas and Italian wine; Naivedyam, still famous for its south Indian thalis and tamarind rice; and Elma’s Bakery for tea and cakes in a wonderful and warm setting.

In close proximity are some of the finest kebabs in the city. Aap Ki Khatir, in a small non-descript shop in the local SDA market, serves some of the finest kachori rolls in the city.

If you’re craving something other than the robust north-Indian food that Delhi does so well, visit Gung, a short rickshaw ride away in neighbouring Green Park. Run by a Korean family, it offers genuine, high quality Korean dishes in a wonderfully authentic setting.
