Samode Palace

near Jaipur, Rajasthan

There are three categories of room: Deluxe, Deluxe Suites and Royal Suites. All rooms are positioned off the inner courtyards aside from the Royal Suites, which sit at the very top of the palace.

Each room, regardless of category, is unique, with the layout and style dictated by the original structure of the palace and many early features – such as untouched fresco work – integrated into the décor. Marble flooring and sandstone walls conjure romance, yet there’s a wonderful modern luxury blended into this, with impeccable finishing across the board. It’s a delicate balancing act that gives five star quality to history. All rooms have a large TV, numerous power points, A/C, and furniture made from fine Burmese teak, while all bathrooms have separate shower cubicles and bathtubs.

We stayed in the Royal Suite – it’s well worth the extra expense for the privilege. While the other rooms and suites offer beauty and luxury, these are simply on another level.

Entered through a thick, traditional wooden door adorned with brasswork, ours had a marvellous Maharaja feel to it, with a large four-poster bed, fireplace nook with thick armchairs and gilded mirrors, separate TV, study and dining areas and a large private roof terrace with jacuzzi overlooking the hills. Painted arches and ornamented pillars partition the open suite as photos of the royal family look down from the walls.

Another Royal Suite had a more modern, almost art deco feel, with an expansive central space that saw a bathtub sit between the bed and the TV. All four Royal Suites have nespresso machines.

Most Deluxe Suites also have private sit-outs or balconies, and are more spacious than the Deluxe Rooms.
