Panjim Inn
Panaji (Panjim), Goa
There’s little to do within the precincts of Panjim Inn; it isn’t the kind of hotel that sets up activities for its guests. Rather, it’s a base from which to explore or else a transit point between holidays in north and south Goa.
The most obvious attraction, aside from the city itself, is the ancient capital of Old Goa; a 20 min drive east, folllowing the Mandovi river inland. (see our Goa guide for more details)
Within the city, there’s a multitude of casinos to keep both the committed gambler and the curious amateur occupied.
Walking around the neighbourhood of Fountainhas is a pleasure in itself that yields many delights, especially in the early morning or with the flurry of activity as the sun goes down.
18th June Road is a major shopping destination and one of Panaji’s busiest streets, running from the steps of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church all the way through the heart of the city.
Take the ferry from the jetty over the bay to the newly-restored Reis Magos Fort.
Spend a day exploring the derelict, charming family-run mansions in and around south Goa, an hour’s drive south of Panjim. Open for public viewing, the Figueirado Mansion in Loutolim, the Fernandes House and the Braganza-Menezes House in Chandor are particularly fine examples of Goan-Portuguese architecture. Finish the tour with a 6-course meal at the splendidly restored and beautifully run Palacio Do Deao in Quepem.
