Old Harbour Hotel
Fort Cochin, Kerala
A great location, lovely gardens and huge rooms make this heritage building a compelling choice for a stay in Cochin at any time of the year. Aesthetically, the hotel is a delight both inside and out; best of all are the serene gardens around the large, shady pool.
If you’re in pursuit of romance and relaxation then this is a good place to start. Fresh flowers and incense perfume the high-ceilinged, airy rooms to great effect, and solid, wooden furnishings, crisp linen and splashes of rich red and ochre create a feeling of understated grandeur and affluence.
Rooms open out to either the lush gardens, the shuttered 1st floor balcony or the cool, lower courtyard with its whitewashed arches and soothing water fountain.
Once you’ve settled in there’s no better place to hang out than in the garden restaurant or by the lovely pool. The restaurant attracts non-guests as well as residents, testament to the setting and the high standards upheld.
There are no TVs in the rooms – which in our eyes is no bad thing – and it’s an interesting touch that sets the hotel apart and complements the old world charm of the property.
As well as the pool there’s an ayurvedic spa and massage facility, plus complimentary yoga is available between 8 and 9am.
The Old Harbour embodies the best elements of the ‘heritage’ hotel concept. Frankly, this is the sort of hotel you wish you could own!
