Nubra Eco-Lodge

Nubra Valley, Ladakh

An otherworldly high-altitude desert acts as the setting for this remarkable property, which combines a village family atmosphere with beautifully constructed cottages and tents.

You might say it’s the last great stay in India – not much further north and you’ll hit China.

The Himalayan desert valley of Nubra, 115km north of Leh over the 17,500ft Khardung-la—on one of the highest motorable roads in the world—is a destination to savour.

A strange and magical place; hot in the day, cold in the night, barren and windswept, eerily silent and sometimes overwhelming.

It can really feel like the end of the world, and yet the land was once a prosperous one, an important portion of the Silk Road until China closed its borders in the 50s. The combination of these factors makes for a breathtaking, almost humbling experience.

By understanding and complementing the breathtaking environment (without sacrificing on comforts), the 11 acre Nubra Eco-Lodge all but guarantees a truly exceptional stay.

On the edge of Sumur village, the Lodge is a collaboration between 26-year-old local Stanzin, a genial and energetic former trekking guide, and Jeeth, a Bangalorean conservationist and architect who provided, among other things, the know-how for the high-end safari tents. The end product is utterly unique.
