Nimmu House
Nimmu Village, near Leh, Ladakh
Nimmu House is in the wonderful village of Nimmu, a relatively low-lying and fertile spot 30km west of Leh, a short distance from the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers.
Although surrounded by the mountains that dominate this landscape, Nimmu itself is far less barren and harsh than many other locations – especially the road between Nimmu and Leh. Orchards and wheat fields create a colourful patchwork, and the prosperity of the village means there are many gorgeous houses to look at.
How to get there:
30kms – a 40 minute drive – from Leh, a taxi can bring you from the airport, or if you’re driving or riding yourself, Nimmu is easily found on the Leh-Srinagar road, although Nimmu House itself is a little hard to find, so make sure you have directions and the phone number to hand. Essentially, the property is on the road between the main market and the next steel bridge.
By air:
Leh’s airport is the nearest. There are no international flights. Domestic flights come from Delhi (1hr 20 mins) or Srinagar (45mins).
By rail:
Not an option.
By road:
There are 2 approaches to Leh: heading east from Srinagar, which takes half a day and is about 420 km, or heading north from Manali, which takes something like a full day and is about 480km. The journey is arduous, don’t expect it to be anything like the Google Maps prediction. Both roads are likely to be closed from October/November through to May.
Distances & travel times:
airport: 30km / 40 mins
railway station: none
When to go:
June to September. The summer in Nimmu is gorgeous, but the winter is brutal, with temperatures dipping to -20c.
Moreover, the roads close from October to May, the snow making them impassable. Flights remain open, but much of Ladakh shuts down for the winter months and Nimmu is no exception.
Getting around:
Walking is best. Otherwise the hotel will drive you around when necessary, or you can hire an Enfield in Leh (or bring your own).
