Nimmu House
Nimmu Village, near Leh, Ladakh
Ladakh is an equal joy for those who want to do nothing except enjoy the beautiful surroundings and those who want to engage in the many activities these surroundings provide.
At Nimmu one can happily spend each day in the gardens, reading, eating, sleeping, but Alex Le Beuan’s long experience as the owner of the Shanti Travel agency means Nimmu House already has three, four and seven-day itineraries mapped out. Activities include visiting the monasteries of Alchi and Lekir, wandering round the local village, and taking picnics on the banks of the Zanskar river.
If you have more time and are keen for some thrills, there’s easy and difficult hiking trails in the surrounding countryside and rafting trips on the Zanskar. It’s also a pleasure taking a motorbike (because of the altitude, an Enfield is a must) out on the roads, especially the often precarious road along the Zanskar River, though rentals have to be taken in Leh.
The city of Leh is a 40-minute drive away. You can spend a day exploring the old town, shopping for souvenirs and Tibetan handicrafts at the refugee market, and visiting some of its more famous sights including the palace and the Shanti Stupa.
