Marbella Guesthouse

north Goa

High ceilings, huge fans, verandahs and solid wooden furnishings give a feel that could be inadequately described as ‘heritage’ but which is in fact just a perfect deployment of classic aesthetics and sensibilities in a relatively (surprisingly) modern house.

Mature beyond its years, the house has been nurtured by its owner rather than having been ‘styled’ by a designer. We loved the clunky switches and taps, thick and imperfect linen, beautiful mosquito nets, tiled floors and heavy antique lamps.

There are 6 rooms in total, 4 on the ground floor and 2 on the upper floor.

First are the Rajasthani and Moghul Suites, both with large beds and bathrooms plus ample lounge areas. The Rajasthani Suite is certainly the better choice with its huge rotund bathtub and porch area. The Moghul Suite opens on to the courtyard / dining area and thus loses some sense of privacy.

Also on the ground floor are the two Bougainvillea Rooms, medium-sized and tidy with light gently filtering in from outside, a shared balcony and doors again opening up to the enclosed courtyard.

From the courtyard, up a winding exterior staircase, are the best of the bunch. The huge and high-ceilinged Penthouse Suite is perfect for entertaining, escaping to write that novel or just living like a king. It has a large private balcony as well as small work/dining area and a massive lounge.

Next door is the Garden Room, a neat, medium-sized quarters overlooking the garden and courtyard below. Like all the rooms it has a tiled, slightly kitsch ensuite bathroom and lovely light filtering in through the trees.
