Marbella Guesthouse

north Goa

Breakfast is not included and this is fairly reflected in the rates; it will suit some and not others, depending on one’s morning appetite.

The breakfast menu has set, continental options but the impression throughout the day is that the cooks are happy to oblige with any special requests; perhaps the only limit being that dinner orders are accepted up until 9pm-ish.

There is no room service but that is hardly necessary, you can just pop down to the kitchen and order food and drinks which can be taken in your room, on your balcony or in the lovely communal courtyard.

The whole atmosphere here is relaxed, there are few rooms so it will never get too busy and the service is low-key and respectful without pomp or ceremony.

Menu

Certainly ‘homecooked’ rather than ‘fine dining’, though with standard Goan and Indian dishes – all of which the kitchen handles very well – that really is the best way to experience them.

There are also a good handful of western dishes available: pastas, salads, soups and burgers in particular. Desserts did their job but it felt like a little knowledge lacked in their preparation e.g. a rock-hard brownie straight from the fridge.

Dining nearby

Across the water, about 20 mins drive, is Panjim, which has a charming historic quarter, home to a good restaurant (and atmosphere) at Panjim Inn.

Recommended in nearby Candolim are Travel Bar (fusion), Chili Hip (Thai) and Tuscany Gardens (continental / Italian).

Further north at Baga creek (Calangute-Baga Rd.) is where the food really gets interesting, here you will find Le Poisson Rouge, and over on the Calangute-Anjuna road is the excellent Lila Café.

There really are so many restaurants that it is hard to single out just a few. As always, check our food guide here for longer listings.
