Marbella Guesthouse

north Goa

Stay here to relax, read and eat. Also use this as a base to explore Goa, you’re virtually in the centre of the state so it’s well positioned for access to the south and north as well as the towns of Panjim (Panaji) and Mapusa.

Explore:
Walk to Sinquerim beach; it’s not the cleanest and first-timers may actually be shocked by the rubbish here (as in much of Goa). The beaches in this area attract a lot of young Indian men and their mobile phones, it does feel safe but women in bikinis should be aware of this.

Walk further up to Candolim beach – simply an extension of Sinquerim – and the bars, noise and crowds increase.

Head further afield and you will be rewarded: Old Goa is not far away to the east, and the more rural, coastal belt of Goa to the north (Anjuna, Siolim, Ashwem, Arambol etc…) is just 20 mins plus by car. Even better, hire a scooter and just go, you won’t get lost and your camera will see plenty of use.

Pamper:
The beauty room allows female guests to hire the in-house pamper-master: henna, massages, pedicures, waxing, manicures, facials and even ear candling are available.

Shop:
Nearby Candolim has more than enough souvenir shopping. Panjim, south across the river, is about as modern as Goa gets; try Fab India there for upscale Indian gifts.

Passing through Anjuna to the north, it’s worth looking out for old furniture restorers, some of whom may ship. Anjuna also hosts a great souvenir and bric-a-brac market on Wednesdays, go early to avoid the biggest crowds and the worst of the heat. Travel on to Mapusa and wander round the Friday market for good souvenirs and a taste of how the locals shop.

Swim:
For a chance to relax and enjoy a swim away from the hordes, spend a few hours at Sonesta Inn in Candolim. 10 mins away by car, this is a rather cheesy resort but non-guests can use the pool for just a couple of hundred rupees.
