Marari Villas (Palm Beach Villa)
near Alleppey, Kerala
Entering the property from the beach takes you into the ‘Sea Breeze’ lounge which doubles up as a reception and dining/bar area. It’s a nice, cool space where you can sit, eat, drink, escape from the sun, watch it go down and then play a game of Monopoly till the early hours.
The villa treads a fine line between being a guesthouse with staff and a leave-you-to-it serviced villa. It’s fair to say then that in terms of food, an extravagant menu could not work with a place this size, so expect wholesome, simple dishes but not a ‘fine-dining’ experience.
One breakfast item is included in the rates and the choice consists of the healthier aspects of a continental spread plus some good south Indian options.
Lunch sees sandwiches, salads and snacks predominate and that’s certainly easier for those with kids in tow.
The dinner menu is pure Kerala, meaning seafood is the focus. There are a few western dishes and some standard veg dishes available but this is really a place for seafood lovers. Order with some notice and if special dishes are required try and ask the day before.
It’s worth mentioning that a barbecue can be set up in the beach garden if requested. We loved the idea that you can head to the local markets with your chef as guide and pick out whatever you’d like him to prepare.
The honesty bar set up is great for those who want to stay up all hours and drink with friends: don’t worry about service ending when staff head home, simply take what you like, make a note of it and pay at the end of your stay. There is no liquor license here but technically that doesn’t stop the hosts buying alcohol and then passing it on at a charge; some good wine, for instance, can be made available so just ask.

Menu
This is a small property so an extensive menu would not be practical. Instead, there are some good Keralan dishes on offer, not great news for vegetarians but great for seafood lovers. Lunch is on the light side and breakfast includes both continental and south Indian options.
Dining nearby
Eating out really entails visiting one of the nearby resorts or hotels on Marari Beach. This is not a bad thing, the menu at Marari Beach Resort for instance, is fantastic and incorporates produce from their own organic farm.
Abad Turtle Beach is another option and a touch closer. Otherwise, do try Purity which is part of the Malabar House group, ask for a car to take you there.
