Marari Beach Resort
near Alleppey, Kerala
There are 3 classes of accommodation: Garden Villas, Garden Pool Villas and Deluxe Pool Villas. All are of the same basic design with low, thatched roofs that reflect the green ethics of the owners, to whom great credit must go for running this, their largest property, to the same standard as their other, much smaller hotels.
All the villas have a good amount of space and privacy, and have cool, tiled floors and high ceilings. Beds can be either double or twin; the resort attracts a large amount of older, European guests who tend to prefer the latter. An extra bed can be provided.
Interiors, though not chic or individual, are unfussy and functional, and were clearly fashioned with taste and a good size budget. We loved the bright, freshly-cut hibiscus flowers left on the bed every morning, and the bright bed runners on the crisp, white bed linen.
Garden Villas overlook the lawns and lily ponds and have little, raised, shady verandahs with comfy chairs (though they don’t look it!). Inside, there’s a small sitting area with wicker furniture, as well as a drinks area with tea, coffee and min-bar/refrigerator.
Garden Pool Villas interiors expand upon those of the Garden Villas, having a larger lounge area, but the main difference is the private space outside. Entering via a solid door at the end of a shady walkway, you emerge into the pool area, enclosed by a high wall covered with vines and flowers. There’s a real sense of privacy here, and with no room service it’s fair to say the space is yours without disturbance. The pools at these villas are small and shallow, ideal for cooling off and for kids to play in but too small for swimming.
The Deluxe Pool Villas are a touch bigger again, and have an indoor and outdoor bathroom, a separate living space and an 8 metre long pool, good for a short swim. Again, the rear of the villa is walled so there’s a great amount of privacy here.

Rate the bathroom!
4/5 – all the villas have outdoor, private, ensuite bathrooms, with the edge of the villa roof covering the shower and basin area so these are still usable during monsoon. The standard of fittings is excellent and the natural products provided are lovely: check out the local loofah with coconut and fruit scrubs and no soap required!
