Malabar House

Fort Cochin, Kerala

This gorgeous 18th century, Dutch-era property now hosts a strikingly contemporary, high-end boutique hotel. Antique sophistication and modern gloss are blended to perfection in 17 unique rooms, and the large sun-dappled courtyard has a small pool and excellent restaurant.

There’s no denying the aesthetic appeal of renovated colonial mansions, and when the owner has a passion for art and antiques you know the result is going to be something special. What you get at Malabar House is the very best in boutique accommodation: style, personal service and attention to detail. Local art, curios, artefacts and vibrant colour are liberally employed, adding character and bringing life to this heritage building.

The location is peaceful and within walking distance of Fort Cochin’s main attractions. The church of St. Francis – the oldest Christian church in India – is just a minute down the road, or you can navigate your way there through the local boys’ cricket match on the Parade Grounds, a dry stretch of open parkland across the road from the house’s main entrance.

The Santa Cruz cathedral basilica is around the corner from here, and the waterfront with its famous Chinese fishing nets is just 10 minutes walk.

As with most hotels in Cochin, this is essentially a base from which you can explore the town for a few days, often before heading off for a backwater boat trip, down to Marari Beach or east to the hill country. Malabar House fulfils this function but the wine bar and restaurant may well prompt you to stay longer.
