Maison Perumal

Pondicherry

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all available in the pleasant dining area, either under cover or in the adjacent courtyard where the sun filters through lovely tropical plants.

There’s also a small bar and lounge area with comfy couches for evenings in. Old Tamil film posters adorn the walls and there’s a cool, kitschy feel to the place, just a pity it closes at 11pm.

Included in the rates is a tasty breakfast with breads, fruit, juices and so on, plus eggs can be cooked up in the style of your preference. Also, check out the buffet lunch which we tucked into with gusto, our soup plus Tamilian rice and lentils was top notch.

It’s fair to say that the food may feel like it is trying too hard at times, but be sure to eat here once or twice as the quality is good and the ambience is great. The hotel hosts food festivals during the year, which hints at the high standards in play. Service is also very prompt and efficient.

Private dining is not promoted but can be arranged for special cases.

Menu

There is a Creole influence in the menu plus some tasty continental and south Indian dishes. We particularly liked the south Indian selection and the seafood was particularly good. There are plenty of options for vegetarians as well.

Dining nearby

The best options for eating out in Pondicherry are mostly in the nearby French quarter. Feel free to ask the staff here for recommendations about places to eat nearby, they are more than happy to help.

Check out Surguru on Mission Street which is a busy, buzzing vegetarian joint, a hit with the locals who come for the super cheap, quick and delicious south Indian thali. No alcohol.

Madam Shante’s (on Romain Rolland Street), where a meal for 2 should set you back around Rs 900, is well worth a visit. This laidback, rooftop restaurant is good for a cozy dinner or group meal, and despite shortcomings in refinement and detail the food is fresh and well-prepared. Dishes include garlic squid, prawns in plumb sauce and grilled pork. Note that no alcohol is served.

Satsanga (Labourdonnais Street) is typically recommended in Pondicherry and priced with an eye on the tourist trade (approx Rs 2000 for a meal for 2 with drinks). Though we found it lacking in some respects, the food mostly hit the right spot and the garden setting is a plus. Difficult to find so take an auto.

Avoid Le Cafe, the only sea-facing restaurant on the promenade (now Goubert Avenue). Run by Pondicherry’s ministry of tourism and with a 24 hour licence and the best location possible, this place should be excellent but instead falls down on every count. Coffee in a plastic glass? No thanks.
