Maison Perumal
Pondicherry
This beautifully restored, old Tamilian mansion is just outside the French Quarter of Pondicherry. Excellent, friendly service, 10 sparse, stylish rooms with antique furnishings and 2 shady courtyards. A great place to come back to after a day trundling round this often overlooked gem of a town.
On a residential street, you’d be forgiven for walking straight past and thinking the ‘maison’ was simply a wealthy family’s home, but step inside and the hotel really comes to life, exuding history with a great family vibe apparent amongst the staff. Dressed in traditional south Indian attire, the team keep a tight ship and the manager is a great asset, interacting with guests and always happy to help.
Treat the hotel as a place to base yourself while exploring the area. Though the area outside is busy and not as serene as the French Quarter, you are still within walking distance of all Pondicherry’s attractions including markets, shops and the beach. Hire a bicycle or scooter to get around Pondi, trips out to Auroville are also recommended.
We loved the swing seat near reception and enjoyed hanging out there clicking pictures, admiring the French influence in the architecture, the bright stained glass around the courtyard, the cool Cuduppah stone underfoot and the rich, teak furniture. The outstanding feature of this hotel is simply the lovely ambience that prevails.

Good to know…
- Located in the busier Tamil / Hindu Quarter, so expect some chaos outside and some noise if your room is located to the front of the building.
- Check-in time is unusually late at 3pm.
