Lutyens Bungalow
New Delhi
You’re in the beautiful heart of the city with easy access to Mughal-era gardens, musuems, art galleries and trendy markets with an ever-revolving cast of bars and restaurants.
Shopping in Delhi, if you have money and patience, can be very rewarding. For textiles, head to the state emporiums on Baba Kharak Singh Marg; for stoles, silver and small trinkets to Dilli Haat; for glitzy saris and bling jewellery to South-Extension; for vintage and small designer stores to Shahpur Jat and Hauz Khas Village; and for high-street clothes and cosmetics to Khan Market and the various malls that dot the southern ends of the city.
Visit art galleries – both the private ones (Nature Morte, Vadehra Art Gallery) with contemporary collections that are mostly concentrated in South Delhi – and the imposing NGMA (National Gallery of Modern Art) which keeps rare works of some excellent 20th century Indian artists. Also drop in at the Crafts Musuem at Pragati Maiden; besides an assorted collection of old tribal art, they have a great restaurant on-site that serves a modern spin on regional Indian food.
Explore the surrounding area: use Lutyens’ fantastic location to walk and see the colonial-era design of the government homes that surround the property; the gardens and Mughal-era tombs that are within a short stroll; and the imposing structures of India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan, which you could reach in 45 minutes at a brisk pace.
