Little Paradise Cottage

Dining at Little Paradise is primarily self-catering. Housekeeper Pascal is available to cook on request but is not a full-time cook and as such shouldn’t be seen to be providing meals on demand. The best approach then is to work alongside Pascal, who will help in planning, shopping for and preparing meals, and with advance notice can perform all these functions himself.

Fortunately, the open-plan kitchen in the main section of the cottage makes cooking not only easy but a pleasure, coming fully equipped with oven, gas stove, microwave, blenders and a range of cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. Various tea and coffee making facilities are present.

Pascal’s repertoire of dishes includes your classic Indian and Goan cuisine, but he can also make salads, soups and some Western dishes.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be prepared if required, timings depend on the individual and Pascal’s availability.

The nearest large market is at Mapusa; Oxford and Orchard are two good grocery stores found in Anjuna, while daily milk and bread can be found in the village.

On our visit we tried fried fish, a beetroot soup taught by the cooks at a nearby yoga school and an astoundingly simple but incredibly tasty chicken curry recipe Pascal learned from his sister.

An eager student, Pascal learns new recipes from house guests all the time, and so his range is ever-expanding.

Dining nearby

There are a couple of really great food options in Assagao and more further afield.

German owned Villa Blanche, just down the road from Little Paradise, is a fantastic day café with a reputation for cakes, coffee, salads, mains and a famous Sunday Brunch.

Gunpowder, a ten minute walk to the opposite side of the valley, on the Anjuna-Mapusa road, features some standout non-Goan coastal cuisine. Think pork, beef and fish with spice and strong flavour.

Ciao Bella, a lovely little bistro run by an Italian couple from Assagao have made proper homemade Italian food their own. A wonderful atmosphere too.

A few minutes more west towards Vagator  beach is the authentic and very cool Japanese restaurant Sakana, whose tuna teriyaki is one of the best we’ve tasted.

For Goan seafood Anand, a local shack, cannot be beaten. That it’s always packed, day after day, is testament to the fact.

Navtara in Mapusa does great dosa and thali, while Ruchira at Hotel Satyaheera has a wonderful tandoori chicken.
