Little Paradise Cottage

north Goa

Assagao is a great base to explore Goa’s most popular beaches and its more beautiful and less developed inland areas.

Rent a scooter or car and go east.  Away from the crowded beaches lie thick coconut groves, paddy fields, swampy jungle-like bird sanctuaries and grandly designed Portuguese houses.

Walk or bicycle around the neighbourhood.

Visit Mapusa, Goa’s vibrant local market town. Just a five minute drive or half an hour walk away, Mapusa has one of Goa’s finest local markets, selling an incredible array of fruit, vegetables, fish, sausages, local cotton, crockery, tea, coffee, sugarcane, cashew nuts, feni, spice and flowers, besides the mountains of other goods normally found.

Assagao is now home to a growing number of yoga retreats and studios that, in season (October-April), host some of the finest yoga talent from all over the world. Daily drop-in classes are available at Swan, and if you’re in the mood for something more immersive and intense, check out the schedule at Purple Valley yoga centre.  Purple Valley is a two minute walk away, Swan is ten.

In Assagao are some of Goa’s finest designers and boutique shops. People Tree is an ethically sourced design studio that sells clothes, lamps, and other bric-a-brac. Cheshire Cat makes beautiful, gypsy-like jewellery using precious and semi-precious stones – their boutique also showcases a range of stoles and dresses by other designers. Both the well known Wednesday and Saturday night markets are a fifteen minute drive away.

Take a cooking class. Cooking schools are now popping up at various places in the area. Ask Pascal for details.
