Ladakh Serai
Saboo village, near Leh, Ladakh
A fantastically friendly property in the breathtaking village of Saboo, a short drive from Leh. Ladakh Serai’s great strength lies in its impeccable service and the charm of its staff, not to mention the cosy yurts that come with their own wood burning heaters.
Owned and run, in a reassuringly hands-on manner, by former nomad, trekking guide and travel agent, Rigzin, Ladakh Serai may not be the most spectacularly designed property in the Leh Valley, but it’s certainly one of the most reliable, with an energetic, inclusive atmosphere that makes it a wonderful place for families and groups who are here to do and get things done.
The 12 yurts and 6 mud cottages, dotted around a terraced garden, offer traditional design alongside more modern comforts (satellite TV), making them a great little refuge whether it’s hot, cold or raining outside.
However, the real heart of the property is the large dining and living room – again, traditionally designed, with wood burners galore – which has plenty of space for eating, drinking and socialising. It’s from here you can observe the hard-working camaraderie of the staff, like one big hard-working family, ensuring the property is superbly well run.
There are some great little extras: a stock of high quality, lightweight mountain bikes, that can be used to great effect on the wonderfully maintained roads around the valley. It’s little touches like this, combined with the fact that the hotel operates as its own travel agent, which make Ladakh Serai a perfect choice for the adventurous tourist looking for a comfortable, enjoyable stay.
