Junoon In The Hills
near Nainital, Uttarakhand
The dining at Junoon is uncomplicated. Put together by the resident caretakers and their families, the meals are hearty and fresh, fitting for the setting and perfect after a day driving, strolling, wandering or indeed trekking through the hills.
Talk to the staff about what they can prepare. Their lunch and dinner repertoire spans North Indian (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) and a bit of continental/western cuisine, as well as local Kumaoni fare.
Breakfast choices include eggs made to order and Indian dishes like parathas and aloo-puri. Ask ahead and they might be able to rustle up idli-sambhar too.
Keep in mind that the nearest ‘town’ is Garampani, a 10-kilometre drive downhill, and solid and liquid rations there will be short in both choice and supply. So stock up on any special eats, treats, and drinks in advance, at Darmani.
Tip – ask the staff if they have any of the bread that the owner makes and leaves behind. And don’t forget to try their homemade pickles.
