Itmenaan Lodges

near Almora, Uttarakhand

The biggest surprise here is the food, which is saying something for a property that has a revelation hiding at every turn.

Naveen, the chef, is the hidden jewel in this already glittering crown. He whips up surprisingly delicate meals with a remarkable deftness, incorporating the management’s commitment to using as much local produce as possible.

Calling the food ‘gourmet’ might sound like reviewer’s enthusiasm, but when you’re tucked away in the hills and can tuck into homemade granola bars, salads made with balsamic reductions and Thai sweet chilli sauces, you know you’ve found a culinary El Dorado.

They serve up delicious local Kumaoni meals too, which apart from the traditional madua (finger millet) rotis and bhatt ki daal, also offers bhang ki chutney. Bhaang, for the uninitiated, is hemp, and this chutney made from its seeds will certainly send your tongue on a trip.

They don’t have set menus here, and while it would be good to confer with the staff on what they can make, the best advice would be to leave it to Naveen. Your palate couldn’t be in better hands.
