Ghanerao Jungle Lodge

near Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan

Jeep safari, bird watching and more:

Staying at Ghanerao means being close to some of India’s most amazing flora and fauna. Head off for a jeep safari and if Shakti – the Ghaneraos’ man in charge – is around then you have the bonus of a very knowledgeable and personable guide.

A short distance from the lodge is the ‘crocodile dam’, stop here for a picnic, there are some 30 crocs living in the vicinity but don’t worry you won’t be within eating distance!

There is an astounding array of bird species in the park area, including wild peacocks, golden oriole, parakeets and kingfishers. Take binoculars and a camera.

Staying in:

Winter evenings are perhaps the best time to enjoy staying in at the lodge, when a bonfire warms up the front terrace and the dining room’s fireplace comes into its own. There are board games available and TV if you fancy a movie. Best of all, this is a time when the lodge exudes history and your hosts can fill you in on the history and significance of the property. Let the food and wine flow and enjoy the camaraderie

Day trips:

Only 30 minutes away from Ghanerao Jungle Lodge is the magnificent and extensive, ancient Kumbhalgarh Fort, which overlooks the park from its perch high on a hilltop of the Aravalli Range. The fort was previously looked after by the Ghanerao family but nowadays is a tourist attraction boasting 300, mostly Jain, temples as well as spectacular views towards the Thar desert.

27km and 1 hour’s drive from the lodge is the village of Ranakpur, famous for its awe-inspiring Jain temple, dating from the 15th century and carved completely from marble.
