Ghanerao Jungle Lodge
near Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan
Previously a lodge for the Raja of Ghanerao’s hunting holidays, this century-old rustic property is still in the family but these days serves to accommodate those who can appreciate the peace and tranquillity that comes with being off the beaten track.
Head here to experience some of Rajasthan’s true treasures: the forest at close quarters, amazing temples, the fort at Kumbhalgarh, and utter respite from the trappings of city life.
The stone-built lodge is set mid-way between Udaipur and Jodhpur, and a bumpy 30 minute drive from the town of Ghanerao where the locals know the property as bagha ka bagh (garden of tigers).
The small town is an interesting place and the many temples nearby are worth a visit. Just across from the lodge itself is the fantastic 10th-century Jain temple Muchala Mahavir.
From the Jodhpur side, the town acts as a gateway to the beautiful Kumbhalgarh National Park, a huge wildlife sanctuary with leopards, crocodiles, bears, antelope and a plethora of birdlife. A 30-minute drive south through the park takes you to the very impressive Kumbhalgarh Fort and the famous, must-see, Jain and Hindu temples nearby.
Spend a few days here and you will be rewarded: animal sightings are virtually guaranteed, authentic Rajasthani food and the hospitality of your hosts all make for a memorable experience.
