Fateh Garh
near Udaipur, Rajasthan
An immaculate, ‘heritage-renaissance’ hotel, sitting supreme on a hillside looking down to Udaipur. Fateh Garh is a great base from which to explore Udaipur without the noise and bustle of staying in the town itself.
Approaching Fateh Garh from Udaipur feels like a privileged escape: a purpose-built, paved road branches off and twists up the hillside above the fertile plain to meet the hotel which cascades down the hill; 2 pools, 2 restaurants and 48 rooms are spread across its 6 terraces.
Built by descendants of Rajasthani royalty whose private residences are being constructed next to the hotel, bearing testament to the great location. Fateh Garh manages to deliver the anonymity of a large hotel while maintaining a slightly ‘boutique’ and heritage feel. With 48 rooms there is still the chance to feel like a valued guest, and the staff – many of whom are local and trained in-house – display friendliness and efficiency in abundance.
Large, open spaces dotted with day beds and a wandering tortoise (with baby in tow!) show thought and humour, and despite the grand feel of so much white marble, the military-style doorman, the luxury spa and the immaculate staff, Fateh Garh somehow remains ‘unstuffy’ and hugely relaxing.
