Eighth Bastion

Fort Cochin, Kerala

There are 19 ‘standard’ rooms here and they are essentially all the same, though with different views and different (covered) balconies or patios.

The rooms are spotless, the linen is crisp and the beds are on the ‘king size’ end of the scale whereas the mattresses are on the soft side. Twin beds can be set up if needed.

As all the rooms have balcony/patio doors there is plenty of natural light, and though there is uniformity in design the rooms veer comfortably away from being bland or utilitarian. Indeed, the overall feel is of a more intelligent, stylish build than the average, modern, concrete hotel.

Ask for a street-facing room to sit out and people-watch, or for a quieter aspect request a balcony overlooking the pool and courtyard. It would be fun to stay here in monsoon, sitting out under cover and watching the rain pour down whilst enjoying a cup of chai.

There are also rooms on the ground floor which are light and airy but have a seating area – and view – of a wall and the greenery growing up it, though it is still a pleasant space.  The real appeal of these rooms is the awesome bathrooms with their big rain showers.

Furniture in the rooms is all solid wood and very tasteful (no chrome or red leather here!), each room has chairs, a cupboard and locker and a writing desk.

Not having TV in the rooms is a real quirk in a modern hotel but this actually endeared us to the place, it seemed somewhat in keeping with the old world influence at play. Note that there is a TV in the 2nd floor communal space, though it seems somewhat redundant at that point.
