Eighth Bastion
Fort Cochin, Kerala
Though it has its fair share of history, Cochin is not rich in things for tourists to do. Most people would stay in the area only for a few days, and though Eighth Bastion is not a destination in itself it is certainly a very comfortable base where you can sleep, dine, relax and take a dip in comfort.
For more things to do in Kochi see our travel guide here.
Explore history:
The top end of the island of Cochin (or Kochi), is known as ‘Fort Cochin’ and is dotted with historic buildings and churches on its narrow, tree-lined streets. Wander round this pleasant area and get your bearings.
The Dutch, Portuguese and British have all had a hand in the town’s development over the years, leaving behind buildings such as the Santa Cruz Basilica, Saint Francis Church and the rather neglected Mattancherry or ‘Dutch’ Palace (not a palace but a museum).
Cycle:
Eighth Bastion have a handful of bicycles which guests can borrow to get around.
Beach:
The beach of Cochin is just a 10-minute walk away. It is not a huge attraction (busy and dirty) but the views at sunset can be lovely. Take a camera!
For a proper, clean beach, get a ferry over to Vypin island – across from the fishing nets – and head up to Cherai Beach for the day.
Tour:
The hotel can organise a guided tour around town, which is a great way to get orientated and undoubtedly the quickest way to get a feel for the place.
