Eighth Bastion
Fort Cochin, Kerala
This new addition to Fort Cochin is a modern hotel with excellent taste. There are no pretensions to being a soulless ‘business’ hotel; instead what you get is a lovely pool area, nicely styled, good size rooms and an excellent restaurant.
This is a great spot to stay if you’re in Cochin for a few days. Located at the top end of Cochin i.e. in Fort Cochin, just minutes from the ferry terminals and historic attractions of the area. There are also some quaint cafes and restaurants nearby.
As you will come to expect in Kerala, the staff here are friendly and helpful. A refreshing lemon and ginger welcome drink was a nice touch while waiting in the lobby which, like the room interiors, is clean and cool with a nod to the area’s history: old paintings of colonial times and a big model Dutch ship.
The property is essentially a square, walled compound with roads on 3 sides so some rooms overlook the street. For us, this presents a nice chance to sit out on the balcony and watch the world go by. In fact, we’d recommend these rooms for that fact, though it’s fair to say some may not like the idea of even occasional traffic noise.
There’s not a whole host of ‘things to do’ here but sleep, eat and relax. Use the hotel as a base for your stay in Cochin and you won’t be disappointed.

Plus points
- Good location, minutes from the seafront and the Chinese fishing nets.
- Modern, spic-and-span rooms.
- Nice pool adjacent to the outdoor dining area.
Good to know…
- No TV in the rooms.
- Some rooms face the road so at times there can be traffic noise. Consider this if you’re a light sleeper.
- The pool is lovely but shallow, and too short for serious swimmers.
