Deogarh Mahal

Deogarh, Rajasthan

Deogarh Mahal has 50 rooms across 4 categories.

Every room is different in layout, outlook and size, and even within the same category the rooms vary greatly though  all have comfy beds and powerful A/C.

The Maharana Suite is the biggest room of all, with impressive mirror work on the walls, a decent-sized main bedroom, two sitting areas and a huge bathroom with perhaps the grandest bathtub in India.

The 4 Royal Suites are next in terms of size and worth paying extra for, whereas there is little difference between the 25 Deluxe Suites and 29 Deluxe Rooms which are smaller still and very varied.

Having been built during a time of conflict and war explains why the rooms here are smaller and less grand than one might presume, and access is via a maze of corridors, alleyways and very narrow, enemy-confusing staircases; a little bewildering but also good fun!

Like many of Rajasthan’s old palaces, Deogarh Mahal is all about ‘old-world charm’, meaning the décor speaks of faded opulence and modern design sensibilities never get a look-in, rooms were constructed to keep out the harsh sun and neutral colour schemes are few and far between.

Whitewashed walls, traditional textiles, cool tiled floors with vibrant dharis and wooden furnishings are all standard throughout the rooms, and historic paintings and photos showcase the progression of the mahal over time.

Wi-Fi is available but with huge, thick walls connectivity in the rooms is patchy. It’s worth noting that only two rooms in the entire hotel have televisions (plus there is one in the bar) so do request one if there’s a show you simply cannot miss!

Almost all rooms have a traditional, cosy alcove area or ‘jharoka’ – great for escaping into a good book or for taking evening tea.
