Dar-Es-Salam
Srinagar
Dar-es-Salam is in Srinagar, north–west India, and to the east of the city on the eastern banks of Nageen lake (‘Nigeen’ according to Google Maps), on the narrow spit of land that separates it from Dal Lake. More peaceful than the latter, Nageen is a delightful spot, and the gardens of Dar-E-Salam a wonderful place to spend time in good weather.
How to get there:
You can get to Srinagar on the train via Jammu, or fly or take a taxi/car from Leh to Srinagar.
If coming from further afield you can of course drive up or fly in from the rest of India; Srinagar is connected to India’s main cities.
The hotel organizes airport and station pick-ups. Otherwise tell the driver to head toward Hazrat Bal.
By air:
Srinagar Airport is the nearest, with domestic flights arriving from Mumbai and Delhi. Dar-es-Salam can collect you from here, or you can catch a taxi or auto to Nageen lake.
By rail:
The nearest railway station is to the south of the city and it’s easy to then reach the lake via taxi or auto. Again, Dar-es-Salam can collect you.
By road:
Head to Srinagar. Nageen lake is to the east of the city and everybody knows it.
Distances & travel times:
airport: 17km / 45 mins
(airport security in Srinagar is very tight; make allowances for this)
railway station: 18km / 45 mins
When to go:
Traditionally, the summer, May to September, is the best time to visit. October to March – the winter months – are very cold.
Getting around:
Auto-rickshaws or taxis are the way to go, there are plenty around.
Taxis in Srinagar are rented by the half-day or day. Autos are available, but their rate is quite high.
