Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served in the dining room in the main house. It’s a stylishly constructed room with old English prints on the walls and fine silver cutlery on the tables; a great place to linger over your meal.

In high season, all meals (excluding breakfast) are buffet-style and charged over and above the room rate.

The hearty breakfast includes seasonal fruit (mangoes, watermelon, bananas), muesli, cornflakes, eggs cooked to order, and a number of Indian dishes like poori-aloo, paranthas and chana masala.

Lunch and dinner feature a variety of Indian food, though Kashmiri dishes are the main draw and specials like rogan josh, gushtaba and lauki yakhni are big favourites with guests.

Srinagar is one of the few cities in India that prepares mutton with more love and care than any other meat, so try and sample as many mutton dishes as possible, particularly the rogan josh, mutton rishta, and the gushtaba.

There is also a small room-service menu which you can order from during non-buffet hours. This includes a selection of soups, sandwiches, kebabs and pakodas, along with drinks. The shammi kebab was a standout.

Breakfast is continental, also with Indian options. The focus of lunch and dinner is really on Kashmiri cuisine.

Dining nearby

Everyone in Srinagar – local or tourist alike – swears by the Kashmiri food at Adhoos’ Hotel at Polo Ground. They’re right, the food is excellent, the atmosphere pleasant, and it’s very reasonably priced.

There’s not much by way of continental food except the two luxury hotel chains (the Lalit Hotel and the Taj Hotel), which are also the only two places in the city with a decent bar and drinks list.

There are also kebabs available on Dal lake in the evening, and outside the nearby Hazrat Bal Shrine.
