Banjara Thanedar

Thanedar, Himachal Pradesh

Banjara is in Thanedar (or ‘Thanadhar’ according to Google maps), a small village centered around the apple and cherry growing business that thrives in this region. It’s a lovely part of Himachal Pradesh and well worth the extra leg from Shimla, which is 80km / 2.5 hours to the south.

How to get there:

By air:
Chandigarh Airport is the nearest airport, with domestic flights arriving from Mumbai and Delhi. From here you can drive the 200km to Seetalvan but it will take a long time. A stop-off at 7 Pines in Kasauli or Sunnymead in Shimla is recommended.
If you’re coming from overseas then fly first to Delhi and then drive. You can also fly to Chandigarh after Delhi and then drive from there if you wish, though it may just complicate matters.

By rail:
The nearest broad gauge railway station is at Kalka and it’s fairly easy to connect here from Delhi or Mumbai. From Kalka you can drive or continue to Shimla via the mountain ‘toy train’, which is not fast but a good experience.

By road:
Thanedar is 16km off national highway 22, which is the main road heading north-east from Shimla. Once you arrive at Narkanda, leave the NH22 and head north on the Thanedar-Bithal road for the rest of the way. Look for the Banjara sign once you hit the village.

Distances & travel times:

airport: Chandigarh 200km / about 7 hrs

railway station:
Shimla 80km / 2.5 hrs
Kalka  170km / 5 hrs

When to go:

Of course, summer or winter is a matter of preference but both are excellent times to visit this part of Himachal Pradesh.

In summer – March to June – when cities like Delhi and Chandigarh get really hot, it is very pleasant up here.

In the cold, winter months – November to February – after the heat and humidity of Mumbai in particular, there’s the fun of sitting by a warm fireplace, sheltered from the crisp cold outside, hopefully with snow outside.

All that aside, June to September’s rains also have their unique appeal as the forest becomes shrouded in mist.

Getting around:

The biggest attraction here is the chance to walk, hike, trek or stroll around the orchards and vicinity, but to get anywhere of note you will need a car or driver.
