7 Pines

near Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh

The main dining room, which can seat approximately 15 people, is a lovely light-filled room on the lower floor of the lower cottage, adjoining the living room. There’s also a little outdoor seating area here, looking over the forest and a small garden; a very pleasant, intimate setting where we discovered our breakfast (included in the rates) laid out each morning.

The continental breakfast options consisted of freshly baked breads, delectable crepes, cereals including organic muesli, fresh fruit salads, freshly squeezed juices and more. There are also typical north Indian options such as chole bhaature, fresh alu and paneer parathas. The quality of produce and preparation was excellent.

Dinner and lunch are both chargeable and do not have a menu per se. Instead, the superb, friendly staff are well versed in figuring out every guest’s needs and you can come to an agreement depending on what the kitchen has in stock. There is no specialty or restriction on what can be served, and everything we had was excellent whether Indian or western, so much so that this writer (and a veggie at that) would return just to eat!

There’s no room service but if you’re staying in the upper house you can always picnic on the lawn in the warmer months. A picnic can also be provided if you wish to go for a hike and stop for lunch.

Menu

There is no menu as such, just discuss your desires with the staff and see what the kitchen has available.

During our stay we got through delicious pasta, parathas, salads and more, and came back a touch heavier even despite the forest walks!

Dining nearby

There is nowhere to eat nearby unless you head to Dharampur (about 25 mins) which has some good dhabas (food stalls) such as Modern Dhaba and Giani Ka Dhaba, and also Hot Millions (for snacks) and a Café Coffee Day.

Kasauli (again about a 25-minute drive) is another option with some hotels and daytime dhabas, or food stalls, in the market (try the samosa chole, aloo paratha or rajma rice!).
