This fantastic two-part guesthouse sits on a peaceful, pine-forested hillside on the steady climb north to the Himalayas. The views are superb and the quaint, measured European interiors are a testament to the owner’s good taste, but ultimately it’s the stupendous home-cooked food that makes us want to return.

As a getaway for groups, as well as romantic couples, it doesn’t get much better than this, and you have to envy Nila Mehta’s extended family who get to come and go on a regular basis.

Don’t stay here for ‘activities’ or sightseeing. Instead, come to relax, breathe deeply and enjoy the expansive views towards distant Shimla, the gentle light of the forest at dusk or the wild flowers that flourish here; your lungs and your camera will both thank you!

Located at Jagjit Nagar, about 60km / 2hrs from Chandigarh and 10km / 20 mins from the old army town of Kasauli, this is a good stop on the way to Shimla (tourist-central in the Himalayas but not without its charms).

The upper house is the older property and used mostly by the owner’s family. If you can get a room there (3 are available) then you have the breathtaking valley views and a lovely lawned garden to enjoy.

The lower house, about 50 metres downhill and more sheltered by the forest, offers 5 more guest rooms plus a lounge (with TV) and dining room. The reception is also situated here and manager Karan, who heads up an excellent, small team, carries out his duties with aplomb, never too busy to help, advise or recommend.
