Insider Tips

Udaipur

  • To grab premium seating at restaurants like Upre and Ambrai, make a reservation for before the evening rush hour starts (around 7pm). There’s a higher likelihood of getting a seat at 7pm than at 8pm. As a bonus, you get to watch the evening fall over the lake, when the buildings are lit up.
  • Skip the expensive sunset boat ride offered at the palace and make your way to Dudh Talai or to Lal Ghat, where you can go for the exact same ride for 120 INR (may be slightly higher for foreign tourists).
  • Udaipur is a city which sleeps early, becoming fairly deserted by 9 in the evening. If you’re relying on autos to get around, be aware that paying 100 rupees for a 50-rupee auto ride is normal.
  • Keep in mind that the drives to places like Kumbalgarh and Ranakpur are winding, and the roads aren’t in the best condition. Arm yourself with some avomine in advance.
